Course Description
The Responsible Serving of Alcohol (RSA) course is designed to provide liquor service staff with the knowledge and awareness necessary to responsibly serve alcohol on licensed premises. The RSA program is a half-day workshop set by Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) and run by accredited RSA trainers. Arrangements can be made for the workshop to be delivered at licensed premises during the day or evening. Persons who satisfactorily complete the course receive an RSA certificate.

Is RSA compulsory?

RSA is compulsory for the licensee and staff serving liquor in a store with a packaged liquor licence. For example, a supermarket or stand alone bottle shop. A venue that trades past 1.00am and has amplified music. These venues will attract a condition on the licence stating that licensees can only employ RSA trained staff. Staff usually have a few months after they commence employment to complete the training. Licensees need to read their liquor licence to see whether this applies to them, and if so, how long they have to get staff trained. New applicants for liquor licences will have to undertake compulsory training prior to the grant of the licence; this training includes RSA.
