What is an Exercise Physiologist?
Exercise Physiologists are 4-year university qualified allied health professionals who specialise in the delivery of exercise, lifestyle and behavioural modification programs for the prevention and management of chronic diseases and injuries. EPs provide physical activity and behaviour change support for clients with conditions such as diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, cancer, arthritis, musculoskeletal pain and many more.
ESSA provides the national accreditation program for exercise physiologists. Accredited exercise physiologistsTM (AEPs) are recognised as allied health professionals. They are eligible to register with Medicare Australia, the Department of Veterans Affairs and have recognition among a number of health insurers. At a state level, EPs are included within health professional awards and in compensation schemes akin to other mainstream health
professionals.
How can an Exercise Physiologist help me?
Some conditions can be prevented, controlled or even reversed with simple changes to lifestyle. Small changes in physical activity, for example, can enhance the quality of life of many people living with these conditions. However, there are many mixed messages about what type of physical activity and how much is beneficial. Some people just don’t know where to start.
An Exercise Physiologist can help get you started by:
- Providing evidence-based information about how physical activity can help your condition.
- Designing a suitable and safe exercise program that you can stick to.
